The Pandemic Of Fear

Jul 05, 2024

One of the common comments many young guys tell me when they get in touch is that they don’t have any goals.

They often tell me they feel their life is meaningless, amiss and at times, they can’t even identify what is wrong.

Yet the truth is they do have goals and like any other goals, are  planned and executed with intent but these are often poor, short term goals, that are nothing more than the focus on the mundane events of the day and not on a worth while long term goal.

Without long term meaningful goals, the days work and repetitive grind becomes the only goal. No wonder people feel the need to shut down, escape and distract themselves.

Let’s look at a day of events I hear many guys have done.

A late night binge of a Netflix series, the intention to get a few beers for the occasion and a takeaway meal, so as not to interrupt the indulging of the series.

These are goals and ones that are commonly planned in advance.

Yet these are not taking anyone anywhere. The focus of our continued and repeated intention becomes our reality, our meaning and our life.

What is a down day for some, becomes a lifestyle for many others.

Distractions and short term gratification goals are likely to be nothing more than a temporary measure, to stifle the knowing we can be far more than we are but are too afraid to take real action and aim at a goal that leads us into unknown territory.

I believe we are in this world to be all that we can be and not fit neatly into a misguided fearful society, that constantly encourages us to be less than we are.

The obsession with TV and sport, fool us into a sleep like mentality that numbs the pain of what could have been and what we are really capable of.

Watching fake people, living fake lives, rather than really create our own vision.

It’s not wrong but there is a consequence to not only what we do but what we won’t do.

Even therapy can be used to prolong and encourage this illusion of helplessness.

It’s all an attempt to hide behind a psychological anesthesia, that keeps us exactly where we are.

Fear.

This is the real pandemic.

People are becoming more afraid than ever and will defend the reasons to stay exactly where they are. Some men would rather die than face their fears.

At Unlimited Courage we make the facing of fear and marinating in its transformational power a primary aim.

The goals that waste time, energy and focus normally have a backdrop of fear.

Turn towards it.

You may find the message is not avoidance but an invitation.

To experience a life worth living, demands you master fear.

As legendary boxing trainer Cus" D'Amato once said;

“Fear is the friend of exceptional people.”

Dempsey - The Autobiography

This is an old book now and can be hard to get but I highly recommend to read it if you can get a copy. This is the story of the heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, who reigned from 1919-1926.

In our age of fragility and softening of society, Dempsey describes his incredibly tough life, which seems like a story from ancient history rather than just over a 100 years ago. His struggles against poverty and trying to attain the championship are just incredible.

This book leaves no doubt, the highest drives and the most formidable never quit mindsets, come from adversity and Dempsey’s story is one such example of endurance, resilience and ambition.

This is an example of the sort of desperate situations Dempsey faced:

“When I was a young fellow I was knocked down plenty. I wanted to stay down, but I couldn’t. I had to collect the two dollars for winning or go hungry. I had to get up. I was one of those hungry fighters. You could have hit me on the chin with a sledgehammer for five dollars. When you haven’t eaten for two days you’ll understand.”

Dempsey is a powerful read indeed.

Unlimited Courage To Stand As A Pillar Of Strength

I expect our society to take a bigger fall into a moral degradation, fragility and weakness over the coming years and I intend for Unlimited Courage to stand strong as a timeless code and mode of being, that can rise above the degeneration of meaningful values and respect.

I’ve always had a strong affinity for helping children and have spent many years guiding them out of addictions, anxiety, depression and trauma. I have seen and read reports of the children I’ve seen, that demonstrate the worst of human nature. in adults.

I maintain my stance, that the way out of many of our current problems is for men to reignite their minds towards a life of courage.

Many parents ask us to coach their children and some of these incredible kids go on to become leaders at school and don’t even let teachers who are following particular misguided protocols, escape their critique and questioning.

It demonstrates just how much potential children have and even though they are vulnerable to harmful ideologies such as toxic masculinity, they also do not have the heavy psychological conditioning of adults, so can more easily move beyond the lies that are sometimes taught.

We intend to open up a learning syllabus In the future for the children to build strong, courageous individuals and we certainly need it.
